Red Bull Rookies Cup: David Gonzalez scored a superb victory in Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup Race 2 at Le Mans.
The Spanish 18-year-old crashed out of the lead at the final corner of Race 1 on Saturday but made no mistake on Sunday morning.
Chasing him through the final turn this time was Sullivan Mounsey, but the British 18-year-old was passed on the line by Fernando Bujosa. Grabbing second place in the photo finish gave 16-year-old Spaniard Bujosa 20 valuable points and boosted him to just 10 points off the lead in the Cup leaderboard after 4 of 14 races.
Points leader Beñat Fernandez was 8th after almost crashing twice and having to do a long lap penalty following a shortcut when he missed his braking at the end of the back straight on his KTM.
1st – David González (Spain)
“The race was just like yesterday, a battle all the way, only the last corner was different. Early in the race, I tried to break the group, but they could always catch the slipstream and get back on my tail. The bike was good, I changed nothing from yesterday, I knew it was only me that had to change the way the race finished.”
2nd – Fernando Bujosa (Spain)
“Yesterday, I had a little bit of a struggle with the gearing. Yesterday evening, I talked to the technical staff and we ran the shorter gearing. So coming out of the corners, I had better acceleration, and it made all the difference; it helped me pass Sully on the line. Of course, I wanted to win, but 20 points is great.”
3rd – Sullivan Mounsey (England)
“I felt really good in practice and in the race yesterday. I was let down in the race by my lack of experience running at the front. I spoke to the Rookies crew after Race 1 and worked out a plan for today. I had one goal, which was to win. It didn’t happen, but it’s a big step forward. I dreamed it, I believed in it, and now I’m going to do it.”
4th – Travis Borg (Malta)
“I was leading in the last lap, but then I almost high-sided coming out of the left corner. I lost all my drive, and everybody passed me. But at least I got good championship points. Overall, it was a good race weekend. It gives me confidence going into Mugello to take a step up.”
8th – Beñat Fernandez (Spain)
“It was quite difficult, because a lot of riders were giving me a hard time. Even with eleven laps still to go, they were being more aggressive than they needed to be. From my side, I have to admit that I was also aggressive in return. I’ve got to learn from this going into the next races in Mugello.”
