WorldSSP: The battle for pole position in the Supersport went right down to the final laps of the session.
Roberto Garcia (GMT94 Yamaha) set the fastest time of the session. The Spaniard had looked set for his first Superpole success until Valentin Debise (EASTROC ZXMOTO Evan Bros Factory) moved to the top times. The Frenchman, who has never topped a Superpole session, celebrated his lap time but Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing Team) was still on track. The championship leader set a time of 1’53.142 to claim a hard earned pole position.
An early crash for Can Oncu (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) put the Turkish rider under pressure during the 40 minute session. In the closing moments he trailed Arenas around the 5.077km circuit to set the fourth fastest time. It continues a strong run of Superpole performances from the Yamaha rider who has qualified inside the top five at all six rounds.
With a track temperature of over 50°C it was a tricky day for riders with Turn 1 crashes claiming the scalps of Oncu and Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) along with another seven riders. Booth-Amos did well on his final lap to set the fifth fastest time.
P1 – Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing Team)
“Today was a very hot day, especially during qualifying, but from this morning I felt really good with the bike. We started well straight away and in Free Practice I focused on my race pace but in qualifying the heat changed our plan because the bike was behaving differently. It was tough to adapt to those conditions but I managed to put it together on my final lap. I’m very happy for the team because they worked really hard after Most to get the bike ready again after the big crash there. The bike worked really well today but now I’m fully focused on the race.”
