WorldSSP: Valentin Debise (ZXMOTO Factory Evan Bros Racing) delivered a double victory aboard this ZXMOTO 820RR at the Portuguese Round after a thrilling last lap in the Supersport class.
A five rider scrap for the podium positions was settled in Debise favour by just seven tenths of a second.
Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing Team) claimed the final step of the podium after a race long battle with Roberto Garcia. The GMT94 Yamaha rider continued to chase his first career podium in WorldSSP but ended the race in fifth position behind his teammate Lucas Mahias. It was disappointing for Mahias who spent all but the final lap of the race in the podium positions.
Having crashed in Race 1 Can Oncu (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) started from the fourth row of the grid and while he made quick progress on Lap 1, the Turkish rider struggled during the race. He was involved in the fight for sixth position but ended the race in eighth position.
Championship Highlights
- Masia leads the standings by six points from Arenas while the first points of the campaign vault to third in the standings.
- Ducati lead the Manufacturer Standings by 11 points from Yamaha while double winners ZXMoto are now third.
P1 – Valentin Debise (ZXMOTO Factory Evan Bros Racing):
“I was expecting a difficult race because the wind kept changing. On some laps there was none but then it would pick up again. At the start of the race there was no wind so I knew I had to get to the front and push hard to try and break away from the slipstream. It was a good race but it was tougher than I expected because everyone improved overnight. The pace was closer. On the last lap I managed to open a gap of about one second so it worked out well. I’m very happy to take this win because it’s my first win here and I’m very proud of the team.”
