Having topped the times in testing and in Friday Practice Jaume Masia completed the set by taking the first Tissot Superpole of the season in WorldSSP.
The Orelac Racing Verdnatura claimed his second career pole position by 0.172s.
It was a strong showing from the PTR Triumph Factory Racing team with Oli Bayliss having a career best showing to start from second on the grid. The Australian has wowed the home crowd this weekend and will be out to fight for the race victory tomorrow. His teammate, Tom Booth-Amos, suffered a nasty Turn 11 highside that resulted in a red flag with 15 minutes remaining but his time still warranted a second row start in fifth position.
WorldSSP has a new manufacturer and Valentin Debise delivered a front row start aboard his ZXMOTO Factory Evan Bros Racing. It has been a very impressive start to a new project with Debise completing 20 laps during the course of the session and looking ready for a race debut for the Chinese brand.
Can Oncu qualified in fourth position, as he did last year here at Phillip Island. The Turkish rider has moved to the Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing squad having finished second in last year’s championship.
P1 – Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing Verdnatura):
“It was a little more difficult today because the other riders have improved after a few days here. They’ve worked well and closed the gap from the test. I’m not completely happy with my lap time because I felt I could have improved it by a few tenths. However, I’m very happy with the work we’ve done. I want to thank my team because we’re strong and my pace is good for tomorrow.”
