Talk about leaving it late. David Almansa (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP) snatched pole in Moto3 for the Michelin Grand Prix of Aragon despite having only a couple of valid laps in Q2 as he beat the all-time lap record for his fifth pole of the year.
It had looked like Marco Morelli (CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team) would claim pole from teammate Maximo Quiles right at the end of the 15-minute session, but Almansa came out on top; 0.043s separated the top three.
Almansa set a 1:56.347s to claim pole position despite losing a couple of laps due to various yellow flags being waved, while also losing the opportunity to set a time when Brian Uriarte ((Red Bull KTM Ajo) bundled his way through at Turn 13 and forced the #22 wide, forcing the Spaniard to leave it until his final flying lap to set his best time and claim pole. Morelli also set his best time, a 1:56.380s, on his last lap and briefly was in pole position but finished just 0.033s off pole. Quiles, returning from the broken collarbone he sustained at Silverstone, will go from third with a 1:56.390s.
Matteo Bertelle (LEVEL UP – MTA) put in a late lap as well to claim a second-row start with P4 ahead of Adrian Cruces (CIP Green Power) after the #11 posted a 1:56.613s. The second row is completed by Brian Uriarte (Red Bull KTM Ajo). The #51 came through Q1 and looked like he was in contention for pole but ended up in sixth, and he will serve a Long Lap Penalty in Sunday’s race. Alvaro Carpe (Red Bull KTM Ajo), Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing) and Valentin Perrone (Red Bull KTM Tech3) will go from the third row.
