WorldSSP: A stunning final lap saw Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing Verdnatura) move from third to first in the final sector with a brace of daring moves.
The Spaniard pushed his way past Lucas Mahias into Turn 15 and then slingshot through on Albert Arenas (AS BLU CRU Racing Team) into the chicane. It was Masia’s second win of the season.
It was an action packed race for Can Oncu (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing). Starting from fifth on the grid he led at the end of the opening tour. The Turkish rider clashed with Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) at Turn 17 on the final lap and was pushed wide after contact. It dropped Oncu to tenth position and that’s where he finished while Booth-Amos went on to finish in third position.
Dominique Aegerter started from the fourth row of the grid but the Kawasaki WorldSSP Team rider, a double Supersport World Champion, was back on form to finish in sixth position. He was less than one second behind the race winner at the chequered flag.
Arenas will start from pole position having set the fastest lap of the race. Masia will start from second position while Debise (EASTROC ZXMOTO Evan Bros Factory) and Oncu will start from outside the leading positions having not set one of the nine fastest laps.
Championship Highlights
Masia extended his title lead to 11 points from Arenas. Debise is third in the standings but 33 points adrift.
P1 – Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing VerdNatura):
“I am fighting as hard as I can and, in our current situation with this bike and the team, I think I’m quite tough to beat. I’m really, really happy. This was a crazy race with a few drops of rain and a big group fighting at the front. The slipstream helped a lot to keep everyone together and in the end we managed to finish first. I really enjoyed the battle with Arenas. It was a fair fight between two different manufacturers.”
